Fantastic Finds: Hot product picks from the show

By Fred LaFemina, Andy Speier & Tim Sendelbach

During the conference, FireRescue’s contributing editors were busy scouring the exhibit hall for new and interesting products. Here are just a few they turned up.

Martinell’s R-30 Rescue Reel

Martinell’s Rescue Reel, designed by Craig and Steve Martinell, is designed for large-area searches in private dwellings, tenements, small commercial occupancies and high-rise buildings. It consists of n auto-retractable reel that attaches to the firefighter and pays out a nylon tape after securing the end at the start of the search area. Directional reflective arrows on the webbing point to the user, aiding in locating downed or trapped firefighters.

Like other search lines, the Rescue Reel allows firefighters to search with confidence, knowing their line is attached in the direction of egress. The auto-retractable feature enables the user to quickly change direction or return to the entry point and not have a tangle of search line to haul out. The lines can be attached together to cover a greater search area. Ideal for performing search operations in smoky conditions, it can also be used to haul tools or as a drag strap.

The reel comes in two sizes, one of which is 200 feet, making it a must-have tool for large-area searches. This tool can also be used for team search and will allow the searches to cover a greater area in more efficient manner. The personal reel device can fit in any firefighter bunker coat or pants and will assist firefighters when conducting searches for life, fire or the source of smoke.

ARA Safety’s Fire Interruption Technology (FIT)

FIT is a new suppression tool used to knock down fires from outside the structure prior to making entry, thereby reducing the risk for firefighters. The dry powder aerosol device is deployed by pulling a pin and tossing the canister into a burning room, where it rapidly extinguishes flames and reduces the temperature. FIT is safe and non-toxic for humans and animals, and it doesn’t lower the oxygen level or change the air pressure in a room.
